Every Once in a while, something comes along that is simply too good to  last! In Venice lately, that has been the Finatic. A 93' Broward Sportfish, to the offshore fishermen...she is beautiful! Tournament rigged and ready, she is perfectly suited to our conditions and style of fishing that we have here in the Northern Gulf of Mexico.

Green Canyon is her fishing ground. Over a hundred miles from shore this pristine fishery is home to all the Gulf's pelagic gamefish. Blue Marlin, Yellow and Bluefin Tuna, Wahoo, Dolphin and Broadbill Sworfish are all common targets for us. Three day trips are the norm and our fishing time is divided between trolling and live baiting depending on the conditions.
When on the troll, we deploy ten lines efficiently from the enormous cockpit. She is a great boat to troll behind, with nothing but clean water to get as creative as possible with your trolling package. Like most, we like a lot of skirted baits and with active rods, cockpit chaos is never far away.

Night fishing is also highly productive out in the Canyon. We fish around one of the many permanent oil and natural gas platforms that act as natural feeding stations for migrating gamefish...Especially at night! These things are lit up like Christmas every night! The light attracts almost every conceivable type of forage for our targets. Squid, flyers and many other kinds of bait congregate around these massive fish attractors to their demise. The light actually make the poor baitfish easier to catch for the predators, which are able to silhouette their food against the surface and attack from the darkness below. Its truly a spectacular site to witness and a chance of a lifetime for a topwater enthusiast like most of us.

A typical trip goes something like this...

Around eleven in the morning you arrive at Cypress Cove Marina to see the awaiting Finatic and her crew.  She will be there waiting for your arrival and the crew will help you load your supplies and belongings aboard. Around noon, your new home departs and heads south down the Mississippi River for about 30 miles until you reach the Gulf. Somewhere, in the middle of the 6 hour trip to the Canyon, you will stop to fill the baitwell with enough livies to at least get you through the first night of action. (baits are  hard to come by at night) You will arrive at your first fishing destination around sundown and will probably troll if there is some light left, otherwise...its strait to live baiting. Yellowfin and Bigeye will be your primary target during the dark hours and tactics will include a lot of topwater, live baiting, chunking, trolling plugs and drift fishing depending on specific conditions. Usually, we are very successful at night and many times we have maxed-out our capacity for tuna on the first night. (That is usually around 25-30 fish depending on size). These are all bled, gutted and then packed in the hold.
Sunrise dons the trolling gear. We switch gears and put our sights on billfish. We average one blue marlin per trip, and they usually fall for a trolled bait. Our ten line spread can be adapted to certan conditions and species. When we have a full hold of fish, we aim specifically for marlin, big dolphin and giant tuna. If we still need to put meat in the boat, we tailor the spread to cater to any thing that is biting.
We also have been very successful utilizing live bait for big tunas and marlin. Bridled bonitas and skip jacks make perfect baits for over sized tunas and marlin. We have also deployed chic dolphin and large blue runners from kites to entice finicky billfish into stepping up to the plate.
Either way, sooner or later, you will pick a fight with this day's efforts.

That evening, several things may happen. You may be tuna fishing again if for one reason or another, the fish box is still not maxed-out. Usually however, we are either traveling or swordfishing.  Many times, we are on the way to a rip or another proven hot spot, trying to be right on the fish when the sun comes up. Typically in these cases, we are headed closer to shore to allow the maximum amount of fishing time for the following morning. When there is a good rip close to the shelf...this is a solid bet.

The whole deal will have you back to Cypress Cove around noon on the third day.

This is a real offshore adventure. Your crew of up to ten passengers, will be poised to travel into an ocean wilderness and do battle with its greatest predators. You will fish from an amazing boat that is outfitted with state-of-the-art-equipment from the electronics to the terminal tackle, an accomplished, extremely knowledgeable and professional staff and every other comfort possible.

This will be a trip of a lifetime!
