Fall is a special time of year in
Venice, Louisiana for offshore anglers. Right around Halloween every year, millions of
mullet congregate around the Head of Passes in the Mississippi River before they head out,
en mass, to find water salty enough to lay their eggs. With the Contenental Shelf a mere 12 miles from the end of the pass...the mass of spawning mullet have mauraders waiting for them. Like clock work, with the outflow of mullet comes the bruiser yellowfins. The action can be feirce and typically we can find fish within a few miles of land. Usually between the seven Mile rigs in 300 feet of water to the shelf in around a 1000 feet. For bait we are using magnum-sized mullet up to 2 or 3 pounds. These big yellows compete for the ones with the row still in side them. Its really something to see. On the business end, we are using 80# stand-up tackle. Shimano Tiagra 50s straped to tough, meaty rods. Usually about a hundred pound leader will do.
