Starting around the first of the year, the Midnight Lump heats up. An offshore seamount which stays stacked with baitfish of all kinds for most of our winter provides great opportunities at king-sized yellowfins into the 200 pound range and monster wahoo. Chuncking takes most of the big yellowfins this time of year although jigging, live baiting and trolling can all pay off from time to time when the conditions are right. Big amberjacks are also a target in the cold months. We wrestle these bruisers away from free standing platforms in 200-500' with 250# PowerPro while using the boat to our advantage.
Once the water heats up and the river settles down...usually by mid May, we start heading further South, around deep water floating platforms that will be our stomping grounds all Summer. Up to seventy miles from the pass! Summer is time to break out the light tackle and the kites. We scale it down and tackle school sized yellowfins (usually 50-80 pounds), slammer dolphin and plenty of billfish action. Its a lot of run and gun around platforms, weedlines, whale sharks, and birds. A lot of topwater targets of opportunity and a lot of double header action on the live baits. Its a lot of fun.
