For most of the year we are able to utalise heavy spinning and bait-casting outfits to deploy poppers, casted live baits and a variety of swim baits. When done properly, you can strap a Shimano Spheros with almost 400 yards of 80# PowerPro. In most cases that's enough to stop all but a bruiser yellowfin. In fact this year, we were able to boat a small blue marlin of about 250 pounds that fell for an Angry Popper on a spinning rod.

During summer and fall months. We run a lot of long-range overnight trips to floating oil/gas platforms in up to 6000 feet of water. There, the nighttime top-water action can be outstanding and back breaking. The game fish use the light from the platforms to siloette baitfish against the surface and then ambush them from below.

Summertime conditions also provide plenty of topwater action and we leave them loaded at the front of the boat while live baiting and kite fishing. Typically a couple nice fish hit the box each trip from targets of opportunity realized from timely casts from alert anglers.
